It’s my story, it’s your story, it’s our story

Share your story as an adoptee, connect with other adoptees, and speak your truth for others to learn from...

Hi everyone,

Thank you for being here, for taking the time to visit my blog. I am very excited and extremely nervous to be writing and sharing my story with you. At the same time that same mixture of emotions is what tells me it is exactly what I should be doing at this point in my life.

Are you an adoptee?

An adoptive parent?

The partner, friend, relative or in any other way a person who is connected to an adoptee?

I hope this blog will be of help and guidance to you all.

Being an adoptee is living a life full of contradictions and mixed emotions.

For me personally, the biggest struggle is not knowing. Not knowing where exactly I am from, what date I was born, what my first mother looks like, where I was the first two years of my life, who held me, who cared for me, if what my adoption papers say is true or not, and so on and so forth.

As I am searching for the answers to these questions, and also do my best to heal from the trauma of separation from my first mother, my first home, my first culture – a healing I did not know I needed until about 2 years ago – I am opening up, sharing my experience, my thoughts and my emotions about what it means to be an adoptee.

I write a lot. I have written my whole life. I have written journals, letters, poems and song lyrics. It is my way of making sense of my life, my emotions, my experiences, myself. I will share some of this writing with you here. I will be writing new things as I continue my journey. I invite you to share your story as well.

I have come to the realization that life is about the people we connect with, the ones that share our experience, or in some other way are able to make us feel seen, heard and validated. That is what we all crave in the end, I think. I have connected with so many wonderful people during my life so far, and so many fellow adoptees during this past year. If I will give one advice to my daughters as they grow up, it is to pay attention to the people you connect with, to find your tribe in this world.

We all have a story to tell. We all have life experiences to share. There is always someone out there who can find inspiration, motivation or support in your story, so don’t be afraid to share it. Own your story, share your story and write your story…

That is what I will be doing here.

All my love to all of you!

/Amanda

PS. We are all in this together!

I was adopted from Medellin, Colombia to Sweden in 1985. I was about a year and a half when I started my life as an adoptee, and it would take 32 years until I was ready to face what that means, what that has always meant, and what that will always mean.
